Inaugural Winner of the
Manpei Suzuki International Prize Announced

For Immediate Release,21 Oct 2008 - The Manpei Suzuki Diabetes Foundation is pleased to announce the inaugural winner of the International Prize: C. Ronald Kahn, MD, Head of the Joslin Diabetes Center, Section on Obesity and Hormone Action, and the Mary K. Iacocca Professor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School, Boston, Massachusetts.

The Prize was inaugurated in 2008 to commemorate the 15th anniversary of the Manpei Suzuki Diabetes Foundation, honoring those who have enlightened researchers in the field of diabetes around the world with their original and excellent scientific achievements.

Dr. Kahn will be awarded a Certificate of Honor, US$150,000, and a Japanese objet d'art at the Award Ceremony on March 10, 2009. On this day, we are honored to have the prize laureate, C. Ronald Kahn, MD, present a commemorative lecture.

The Selection Committee of the Manpei Suzuki Diabetes Foundation recognizes the most extensive and valuable contributions of Dr. C. Ronald Kahn over years of research in the field of diabetes, from the discovery of alterations in insulin binding in the disease state to the generation of tissue-specific insulin receptor knockout mice, all having an enormous impact on our understanding of the mechanism of insulin action as well as insulin resistance.

The Manpei Suzuki Diabetes Foundation hopes to contribute in advancing diabetes research with this yearly prize, enabling greater interchanges of ideas to fight this most prevalent disease.
