2019-2022　Award Ceremonies have been held on March 8, 2023

The award ceremony and the commemorative lecture for the 2019-22 Manpei Suzuki International Prize for Diabetes Research were held on 8th of March, 2023 at Keidanren Kaikan in Tokyo.

Due to the postponement of the three award ceremonies for the years 2019-21 caused by COVID-19 pandemic, we have just held a joint award ceremony to welcome these three recipients together with the most recent one for 2022. The past three commemorative lectures presented by the award winners have been already held via online in March 2022 with simultaneous delivery to three countries. The commemorative lecture by the 2022 award winner was presented at this award ceremony.

[Award Lecture]

“Metabolic regulation of insulin secretion in health and disease”

First, opening remarks was presented by Dr. Sunao Manabe, the president of the Manpei Suzuki Diabetes Foundation. Then, Dr. Hiroshi Yamamoto (2019 Selection Committee’s chair, president of Komatsu University) , Dr. Takashi Kadowaki (2020-21 Selectin Committee’s chair, director of Toranomon Hospital), and Dr. Masato Kasuga (2022 Selection Committee’s chair, director of the Institute of Medical Science, Asahi Life Foundation) presented their reasons for awarding the prizes in the respective years.

Dr. Ashcroft, the 2022 award winner, received a certificate of honor as the main prize, 150,000 U.S. dollars as the supplementary prize, and a Japanese artwork (an Iro-Nabeshima tachibana vase by Imaemon Kiln) as a memento of the award, from the president Manabe.

The award ceremony and the commemorative lecture were attended by many people, including invitees of the award winners, officers and trustees of the Foundation and other related parties, returnees of overseas study subsidized by the Foundation, and executives of Daiichi Sankyo Co., Ltd.

The ceremony was successfully held with thorough infectious disease measures.
