Manpei Suzuki Diabetes Foundation announces new international prize for diabetes research

For Immediate Release, 5 Feb 2008 - The Manpei Suzuki Diabetes Foundation announces a new international prize, the Manpei Suzuki International Prize for Diabetes Research for original and excellent achievements in basic or clinical diabetes research. The prize is established this year, in 2008, to commemorate the 15th anniversary of the foundation. By providing this opportunity to researchers of the world, the foundation hopes to advance diabetes research that will contribute to the health and welfare of all people.

Nominations are now being accepted at http://www.manpeisuzukiprize.org until 31 May 2008. Members of the American Diabetes Association (ADA), European Association for the Study of Diabetes (EASD), Japan Diabetes Society (JDS) or other publicly recognized societies of related fields can submit one nomination application per person per year.

A Certificate of Honor and $150,000 USD prize will be granted to one investigator working in the field of diabetes or related fields.
The award will be presented in January, 2009 in Tokyo.

About Manpei Suzuki Diabetes Foundation
Manpei Suzuki Diabetes Foundation, 12-5, Akasaka 3-chome, Minato-ku, Tokyo was established in 1993 by Mitsu Suzuki, in keeping with the last wishes of her husband, the late Manpei Suzuki, who was former president and chairman of Sankyo Co., Ltd. (presently Daiichi Sankyo Co., Ltd.) chairman of the Federation of Pharmaceutical Manufacturers' Association of Japan, and member of the House of Councillors, The National Diet of Japan. He suffered from diabetes mellitus in the last years of his life and wanted very much to promote research on this disease. The Manpei Suzuki Foundation helps to send Japanese researchers overseas for study, invites researchers from abroad who are working in the field of diabetes, holds international conferences and symposia, supports international joint research, and acts as an information center for diabetes.
