Mr. Hideho Kawamura, president of the Manpei Suzuki Diabetes Foundation gave the opening address and presented the first Manpei Suzuki International Prize for Diabetes Research to Dr. C. Ronald Kahn, president of the Joslin Diabetes Center and Mary K. Iacocca Professor of Medicine of the Harvard Medical School, Boston, Massachusetts on March 10, 2009, at a ceremony held in Tokyo, Japan.
Dr. Kahn received a Certificate of Honor, US$150,000, and a Japanese objet d’art.

Dr. Masato Kasuga (M.D., Ph.D. Director-General, Research Institute, International Medical Center of Japan) presented the reasons for bestowing the prize to Dr. C. Ronald Kahn for 2008.
Dr. Kahn’s commemorative lecture was entitled, “Tracing the Metabolic Syndrome to its Molecular Roots.
