Mr. Takashi Shoda, president of the Manpei Suzuki Diabetes Foundation gave the opening address and presented the 2013 Manpei Suzuki International Prize for Diabetes Research to Dr. Bruce M. Spiegelman, Stanley J. Korsmeyer Professor of Cell Biology and Medicine, Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, Harvard Medical School, USA, on January 17, 2014, at a ceremony held in Tokyo, Japan.

Dr. Spiegelman received a Certificate of Honor, US$150,000, and a Japanese objet d’art.

Dr. Takashi Kadowaki, the chair of the Selection Committee presented the reasons for bestowing the 2013 Prize to Dr. Bruce M. Spiegelman.

Dr. Spiegelman’s award lecture was entitled “Beige and Brown Fat: Basic Biology and a New Generation of Therapeutics”
